Applying Research in Reading Instruction for Adults, First Steps for Teachers (2005) applies the identified research principles to actual reading practice. This “teacher-friendly” publication was authored by Susan McShane and reviewed by the Adult Reading Expert Group: Judith Alamprese, John Kruidenier, Daryl Mellard, Stephen Reder, John Sabatini, and John Strucker. Practitioner Wisdom

Teachers use diagnostic reading assessments to determine students’ reading strengths and needs.
Observe and note students’ engagement and progress with instructional practices and resources: what did work?
Collect and share challenges and successes, teaching materials, curricula, websites, platforms, etc.

According to data collected in MN Adult Education:

- - Understanding EBRI increases reading teachers’ knowledge, skills, and confidence
  - Implementing EBRI increases reading teachers’ use of effective instructional practices
  - Participating in EBRI increases Intermediate students’ level completion rates and persistence

Much of what we are able to include in this EBRI course is due to the input of MN Adult Education teachers over many years, including the recommendation of effective resources, materials, strategies, and practices and solutions to challenges in teaching EBRI.
