Because some DL platforms may require less teacher time for the tasks listed in the previous section, they are often most appropriate for supplemental approaches to distance education. In these approaches, independent and asynchronous learning activities are not necessarily closely aligned to content being covered in synchronous classes.

Example: Learners in synchronous reading classes are encouraged to practice their reading comprehension skills by reading short passages and taking quizzes in Read Theory for additional practice. Teachers cannot select specific Read Theory quizzes to complement content or activities taking place during class sessions. Instead, the quizzes that each learner takes are determined by the Read Theory platform itself; each learner experiences a custom pathway to reading improvement on the site. DL proxy hours for Read Theory quizzes are recorded in a Read Theory class in SID.

On the other hand, it is also possible to use DL platforms very effectively as part of a hybrid and/or blended learning or even “flipped classroom” approach. Learn more about how teacher Tammy Twiggs uses CommonLit in her blended classes.
